Church History

From Birth to Growth

In June 1959 when Rev. Ralph and Mrs. Price moved their family to Lebanon and opened their home for Sunday school and worship gatherings. What started as a small house church quickly became a Spirit‑led movement shaped by prayer, hospitality, and a deep sense of calling. On October 11, 1959, Lebanon First Church of the Nazarene was officially organized with thirteen charter members.

As the congregation expanded, the church moved from the Price home to the National Guard Armory, and later to West Dick Street, where vibrant ministry took root—including a Vacation Bible School that welcomed 100 children. The church with its growing congregation began seeking a permanent home and in 1965 the congregation purchased property at the corner of Camp and Garfield streets. The first service in the new building was held in March 1966, and over the next two decades the church added classrooms, ministry space, and eventually a dedicated sanctuary in 1979 as the congregation continued to grow .

The Fire That Couldn’t Stop the Church

In the early hours of August 5, 2012, lightning struck the church building, igniting a fire that destroyed the facility. The loss was devastating, but the congregation’s response became one of the most defining moments in its history. Members gathered in the parking lot—praying, grieving, and declaring hope for the future.

Members spoke with hope and conviction that God would rebuild what had been lost. Within months, ground was broken on a new facility at the same site. The rebuilt church was designed to serve the congregation and community with flexible ministry spaces, classrooms, and room to grow into the future .

Today, Lebanon First Church of the Nazarene remains a community shaped by grace, resilience, and a deep love for our city. We continue to live out our calling: “To make Christlike disciples in Lebanon, Indiana.”
